Illustration Process

Every collaboration begins with a complimentary consultation to discuss your project’s scope, timeline, and intended audience. Once a proposal is approved, the standard workflow includes:

  1. Research & Conceptualization: Reviewing your source materials (e.g., surgical videos, radiological imaging, photographs, or manuscripts).
  2. Sketch Phase: Providing preliminary drafts for your review of scientific accuracy and composition.
  3. Revision Phase: Iterative adjustments based on your or your subject matter expert’s feedback.
  4. Final Render: Delivering the polished 2D digital painting in your required file formats.

To ensure the highest level of accuracy, it is helpful to provide surgical videos, radiological imaging (in DICOM format), existing manuscripts, photographs, or even hand-drawn rough concepts. If you have selected a publisher, a copy of their figure specifications will ensure the final files meet their needs (file format, dimensions, resolution, etc.).

Production times vary by complexity. Simple figures or single-subject paintings often take one to two weeks, while more complex surgical sequences or detailed anatomical plates may require four to eight weeks. Prompt and careful reviews by you and your subject matter experts will speed the process.

Pricing is project-specific and based on factors such as the complexity of the subject, the required level of detail, and the intended usage rights. Custom illustrations typically range from $500 to $2,500+ per image depending on these variables.

Standard practice is that the illustrator retains copyright while granting you a license for specific uses (e.g., journal or book publication, academic presentations, patient ed materials, or website use). Unlimited (“all-use”) licenses and exclusive licenses may be available but are more expensive.

Yes, but licensing fees are determined by the nature and duration of use. If you know you will need the image for both a printed textbook and a digital marketing campaign, please mention this during the initial consultation so the license can be structured accordingly.

No! Although I am most familiar with human gross anatomy and surgical subjects, I love collaborating with professionals in other biological disciplines. I would love to learn about your zoological, botanical, anthropological, and paleontological projects!
